“Ubi caritas et amor, ibi Deus est”

The canon Ubi caritas et amor, ibi Deus est was composed by Sir Antal Doráti, orchestra conductor and honorary president of the Accademia, in Strobl, Switzerland, on 3 July 1966 and was dedicated to his friend Josef Juhar. Thirty years later, the first of the two versions (I) became the official hymn of the “Mundus Cantat” choral encounters.

The canon is sung the first time by the four parts entirely in unison. It is then sung by the four individual parts, which enter as indicated on the sheet music (1, 2, 3, 4).

“Pater noster”

The canon Pater Noster", composed by Antal Doráti in 1988 and performed for first time in 1988 in Stockholm, was included in the Accademia’s program for the concert that was to be performed for John Paul II on 2 August 1992. Cancelled when the pope was unexpectedly hospitalized, the concert was then performed in the Duomo of Orvieto and attended by a Vatican representative.

To a greater extent than other sacred texts, the Pater Noster in Latin expresses the Accademia’s aspiration to promote worldwide ecumenism through music. As a result, it is often included in the ecumenical celebrations and choral concerts that are part of “Mundus Cantat”.

The sheet music is a copy of the 1988 original. The canon was published, with a few corrections, by Müller&Schade, Bern (1996).
